But it’s not all about comfort
There are medical conditions which can arise from long and prolonged motorcycle journeys over a number of years.
Erectile dysfunction and Bladder control:
According to a study published by the National Library of Medicine (US Government site) in March 2023, there is a link between motorcycle riding and erectile dysfunction. The study, which focused on people who ride motorcycles for their occupation, found that the more time someone spends riding, the lower their IIEF-5 score, indicating a higher risk of erectile dysfunction (ED). This increased risk is likely due to prolonged pressure on the pudendal nerve from extended periods of motorcycle use.
The pudendal nerve carries signals from the brain and spinal cord to the penis (as well as the bladder), triggering blood flow and erection as well as controlling sensation in the bladder potentially leading to issues like urgency frequency, or stress incontinence.
Of course, if you don't ride too often, it's unlikley to be a major issue, but it’s always something to consider if you have been riding for a number of years.
